The sweets were originally called 'unclaimed babies', invented in 1864 by an Austrian man working at Fryers of Lancashire. In 1918 they were produced by Bassett's in Sheffield as 'Peace Babies' to mark the end of World War I. Production was suspended during World War II due to wartime shortages. In 1953 the product was relaunched as 'Jelly Babies'. In March 1989 Bassett&'s were taken over by Cadbury-Schweppes.

A woman had a portion of her skull stored in her stomach for 42 days following brain surgery over the summer. Jamie Hilton, a former Mrs. America pageant contestant, suffered a traumatic head injury after falling about 10 feet from a platform onto rocks in Hells Canyon, Idaho, during a fishing trip with her husband and brother-in-law in June. According to the Deseret News, doctors at the Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center removed about 25 percent of her skull and stored it in her stomach to keep it nourished while her brain healed.

Red Dog (c. 1971 – 21 November 1979) was a Kelpie/cattle dog cross that was well known for his travels through Western Australia's Pilbara region. There is a statue in his memory in Dampier, which is one of the towns to which he often returned. He is frequently referred to as a 'Red Kelpie'or a 'Red Cloud Kelpie'.

The Dickin Medal was instituted in 1943 in the United Kingdom by Maria Dickin to honour the work of animals in war. It is a bronze medallion, bearing the words 'For Gallantry' and 'We Also Serve' within a laurel wreath, carried on a ribbon of striped green, dark brown and pale blue. It is awarded to animals that have displayed 'conspicuous gallantry or devotion to duty while serving or associated with any branch of the Armed Forces or Civil Defence Units'. The award is commonly referred to as 'the animals ‘Victoria Cross'.
